Salmon Holes is a popular small fishing beach located in the Tondirrup National Park. The area get is name from the Australian Salmon that come to rest in the bay. If you are here at the right time of year, you could see schools of salmon. This also makes it a popular fishing spot.

All that said, you could sum up Salmon Holes in one word – picturesque. It has it all – a curving white, wide sandy beach, turquoise waters. a shallow reef offshore, and rocky outcrops.

Arriving at the carpark, you will have some coastal views, although the beach itself will not be immediately visible. There is a lookout available to view the beach, and it is worth the stopping here to take in the view.

Small wooden stairways either side of the carpark lead you down to the white sands of the beach. On the beach will be lines of people trying to catch a fish.

The small bay is sheltered from three sides. The north and south end of the beach have rocky hills, while the west is protected by high sand dunes covered in vegetation. From the bay, you can view the Southern Ocean towards the southeast.

Fishing

Many people come to fish at Salmon Holes. You will often see people lined up along the beach with their lines cast out into the water. In addition to salmon, you may be able to catch herring or bream.

There are also rock fishing opportunities here, but you will need to take precautions if heading out onto the rocks. The rocks can be slippery and ocean swells can cause trouble. So much so, that life jackets need to be worn while fishing from the rocks.

Walking Trail

There is also a short walking trail at Salmon Holes. The beach walk is a loop of about 600 metres and can be complete in about 15 minutes.

How to get the Salmon Holes

Salmon Holes is located in the Tondirrup National Park along the northern end of Isthmus Bay. It is located approximately 22kms from Albany along Frenchman Bay Road. There is a well sign-posted turnoff to the Salmon Holes car park.
